WIC basevisit, Leeuwarden AFB

07-07-2026

The base visit organised by Spottersgroup Leeuwarden (AGL) was unfortunately a disappointing experience from a photography perspective. Although the opportunity to visit the airbase was appreciated, the time allocated on the flight line was far too limited to make the most of the event.

Our visit coincided almost exclusively with departing aircraft, allowing us to photograph take-offs only. There was no opportunity to remain on the base long enough to capture the arrivals from the third flying wave, which are often among the most interesting moments for aviation photographers.

The weather conditions further reduced the photographic opportunities. Persistent overcast skies resulted in flat lighting and poor image quality, making it difficult to produce attractive photographs.

In addition, the designated photography location next to the runway proved to be far from ideal. The viewing angle and distance limited the variety and quality of shots that could be taken, leaving little room for creative or dynamic compositions.

The combination of the restricted time on base, the inability to photograph later arrivals, unfavourable weather conditions, and the poor shooting location resulted in a very low number of acceptable photographs from the visit.

For future base visits, it would be beneficial to allow participants more time on the airfield, include both departures and arrivals in the programme, and, where possible, provide access to more suitable photography locations. These changes would greatly improve the overall experience for aviation enthusiasts and photographers alike.
