Yokosuka MXY7 Model 22, 1089

History

The sole surviving Model 22 was captured in Japan in 1945 and was shipped to the United States for technical evaluation.It was transferred to the Smithsonian Institution on April 15, 1948.

Initially displayed at the Smithsonian's Arts and Industries Building, the Ohka Model 22 was moved to the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility in Suitland, Maryland, in the early 1970s. In January 1994, restoration efforts began, which included fabricating missing air scoops, installing a new engine, rebuilding the cockpit, repairing the airframe, and repainting the aircraft. The restoration was completed in 1997, and the aircraft has been on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center since December 2003.
