Junkers Ju 52/3m, WNr. 6595, A-702

History

The Junkers Ju 52/3m with Werknummer (WNr.) 6595, known as A-702 in Swiss Air Force service and later registered as HB-HOT with Ju-Air, is a notable example of Swiss aviation history.

Constructed in 1939, this aircraft was delivered to the Swiss Air Force, where it served under the designation A-702. The Ju 52/3m, a tri-motor transport aircraft, was integral to Switzerland's air operations during the mid-20th century. A-702 remained in active service until 1981, participating in various military exercises and missions.

In 1982, the aircraft transitioned to civilian use when it was acquired by Ju-Air, a Swiss organization dedicated to preserving and operating historic aircraft. Registered as HB-HOT, it became one of the fleet's most prominent aircraft, participating in numerous airshows and public flights. Notably, HB-HOT was featured in the films Where Eagles Dare(1968) and Valkyrie (2008), showcasing its versatility and historical significance.

On August 4, 2018, while conducting a sightseeing flight from Locarno to Dübendorf, HB-HOT tragically crashed into Piz Segnas mountain in the Graubünden region of the Swiss Alps. All 20 individuals aboard—18 passengers and 2 crew members—lost their lives in the accident.
