Mitsubishi A6M2, 5784, "V-173"

History

Serial number 5784, designated "V-173," was among the Zeros deployed in the Pacific theater. After the war, this particular aircraft was recovered as a wreck and later restored. It was found to have been flown by Saburō Sakai during operations over Lae, New Guinea.

Saburō Sakai was one of Japan's most accomplished fighter aces during World War II, credited with shooting down numerous Allied aircraft. His experiences and combat missions have been documented in various historical accounts, highlighting his skill and the challenges faced by pilots during the war.

The association of "V-173" with Sakai adds a personal and historical dimension to the aircraft, making it a poignant exhibit at the Australian War Memorial.

The Australian War Memorial in Canberra houses "V-173" in its Aircraft Hall, where it is displayed suspended from the ceiling.
